What Brand New Day got right that No Way Home didn't
At the end of No Way Home, Peter makes everyone forget who he is. Ned, MJ, all of it, gone. And what gets me isn’t the spell itself, it’s what he does after. He doesn’t try to find a way back to them. He just lets it stay severed and starts over alone, like that’s the responsible thing, the noble thing.
Years later, Brand New Day picks him up still living in that. Still alone in the way he chose back then, except by now it’s not a choice anymore, it’s just how things are. And somewhere in there he finally reaches back out to someone he’d let go quiet for years.
When I first watched No Way Home, I remember wishing I had a spell like that for myself. Not to protect anyone, just to disappear from everyone’s memory and start over clean. I wanted to be forgotten. It felt easier than being known and still struggling the way I was.
Watching him finally reach back out in Brand New Day, I sat with that longer than I expected to. I’ve had my own version of that severed thing, someone I cared about who I let go quiet on, not because of a spell, just because it felt easier to stay in the distance than to close it. It had only been a few months since the last thing I’d said to them, not years, but it felt longer than that. Long enough that I’d already started telling myself it was fine, that reaching out would be weird or unwanted or just too late.
He’d spent actual years building an entire identity around being someone who doesn’t reach out. Seeing him do it anyway made a few months of my own excuse feel a lot smaller than it did before.
So I messaged them. Nothing dramatic, just something small to close the gap a little. We talk now. I don’t know exactly what that means yet. But I don’t think I needed to know. I just needed to stop being the version of myself that doesn’t.
