My BPD diagnosis story
I always felt different. Like I didn’t belong wherever I was. Everything just felt… weird, in a way I couldn’t really explain as a kid. I got labeled oversensitive. Too clingy. Like those were just flaws in my personality I needed to fix.
Nobody was looking at the bigger picture yet. I got diagnosed with depression at 12. Again at 14. Again at 16. Each time it was treated like its own separate thing, not part of a pattern. At some point during all that, someone mentioned they suspected BPD, but they couldn’t actually diagnose it yet - not at that age, not with what they were seeing.
So I just kept carrying it. Undiagnosed, mislabeled, told I was too much.
I finally got the full diagnosis at 20, after an actual psychiatric evaluation and an MMPI-2. That was the first time it felt like someone had the full picture instead of just treating symptoms one at a time. It didn’t erase the years before it, but it explained them.
The thing I keep coming back to is that through all of it, I always wanted to help others, even while I was clearly struggling myself. That hasn’t changed. If anything, going through this made me want to actually understand what I was carrying instead of just being told to manage it.
This won’t be the only thing I write about it. But it felt right to start here - with how I got here in the first place.
